What is Urogynecology
Until very recently, the pelvis has been treated by three differently trained doctors: OB/GYNs, Urologists and Proctologists. Our newest understanding is that the pelvic organs cannot be separated into individual organ systems. We know the pelvic organs all share common blood supply and nerve supply. We also know the pelvic organs all share common support from the pelvic muscles, bones and ligaments. Pelvic floor problems rarely affect just one organ system. This new recognition has lead to the formation of the subspecialty of Urogynecology. Urogynecologists are cross-trained to deal with all non cancerous conditions affecting all three organ systems in the pelvis. Our Urogynecologists are fellowship trained in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. This means that after four years of residency, our Urogynecologists spent an additional three years specializing in the treatment of pelvic floor disorders.
Aging and childbirth complications, especially incontinence, are "closet conditions." They affect nearly 50 percent of all women. These conditions cause embarrassment, but are rarely discussed or treated. The good news is that you do not have to live that way anymore.
